   Proposal Description:
   Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory autoimmune disorder. Studies have shown that inflammation may be a risk factor for neurodegeneration, and elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers have been found in persons with Alzheimer?s disease (AD). Paradoxically, a negative association between RA and AD has been observed in several studies. It is hypothesized that this protective effect may be attributed to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), a common RA treatment, but clinical trials have not demonstrated a reduction in incidence of AD after NSAID treatment. Recent studies have focused on immunosuppression therapies that target inflammation to elucidate the relationship between RA and AD. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between RA, NSAIDs, immunosuppressive drugs, and AD.
